In recent weeks, Lively Dual Trust Ltd, under its “Click a Condom” brand, has been running radio adverts promising to deliver condoms when and where demanded.
LILLIAN VIKO BYAMUGISHA is one of the directors at LDT, which is based on Ssemawata road in Ntinda. She spoke to our reporter about the two-moth-old business venture.
First, why click a condom?
The origin of the idea was very interesting. We as women realized that although we need to use condoms as contraceptives, buying a condom is not easy, especially if you are a married woman or a woman of a certain age.
What happened was that one of us went to a pharmacy, but because there were so many people walking in and out, it was not easy to buy condoms. Sometimes you go to a pharmacy with certain prescriptions that you may want to discuss in privacy, but because of the setup of a pharmacy, you have to discuss them when everyone around is listening. So, we came up with this concept.
So, how does Click a Condom work?
There are four methods of buying from Click a Condom. First, you go to our website, http://www.clickacondom.org, where you can view all the different types of condoms and their different features.
You select the type you want, indicate the location you are in, the method of payment – whether payment on delivery or payment by Visa, Mastercard, Pesapal or mobile money, and then you check out.
Then, we at our office get your message through an email and immediately, we dispatch. But by then we have got your email address; so, we can write back to you. Two, we have got your phone number; so, we can call you to establish clearly where you are.
The second option, you can just call in and describe the type of condom you want and tell us where you are, and then we dispatch someone to deliver.
Third, you can just send us a WhatsApp message with the details of your order, and we will deliver. Finally, you can SMS the specifications and your location and we will deliver.
What is the interval between ordering and delivery?
We are open between 8am and midnight. The shortest time we can take to deliver is about 15 minutes, but the longest is two hours. And that depends on your location.
What is your target group?
Anyone above 18 years of age.
What if a 12-year-old boy or girl places an order?
Well, it is not a straight thing. But one is that we deliver the condoms ourselves: so, it is obvious that we will tell if it is a young boy or girl [and withhold the order].
Also, on our website, we ask people to state whether or not they are above 18 years of age. But also, given the products we are dealing with, and the methods of payment and access, it is almost a natural selection that you will have older people buying. The space for underage people to order is limited.
How affordable are your services?
They are very affordable. We have something for everybody. Prices range from Shs 2,500 to Shs 10,000. That figure does not include the delivery charge. Your location determines how much it will cost to deliver to you. The lowest delivery charge is Shs 3,000 – that is within Ntinda, Naguru, Kiwatule…
Do you deliver female condoms?
Female condoms are part of our menu because we know that it’s important for anybody to be responsible for their own health, and not all men will accept to wear a condom.
Is there anywhere else this concept has worked, with particular regard to condoms?
Well, we did read up a bit about this when we were starting and we stumbled upon a Facebook page of a lady in Nairobi who is dealing in condoms. And this boosted our conviction that it could actually work in Uganda.
So, is it working?
It’s difficult to gauge how the business will be, but going by the current trends, we are receiving many inquiries. I think many people seem to be surprised that this kind of thing is actually happening. We are getting a few buys a week, which is already encouraging because Click a Condom is barely two months old and we are not yet really known.
We also hope to get into partnership with other people who are distributors of condoms so that we can work together to promote condoms for health reasons beyond even HIV. Most people only think about HIV but there are many other STIs that can be avoided by just using a condom consistently and correctly.
What is your coverage area?
Currently, we can only distribute in and around Kampala because we use motorcycles to distribute our products. But with time, we expect to open up distribution centres in other parts of Uganda.
