A jilted resident of Gulu District on Sunday burnt his wife and himself to death accusing his parents of failing to give him bride price to marry his spouse.
Samuel Ochora, 32, a resident of Laroo Division in Gulu Municipality, is reported to have drenched himself and his wife Annet Auma, 28, with petrol before striking a match box to set him and his wife ablaze.
The couple were rushed by neighbours and the Police Fire Brigade to St Mary’s Hospital Lacor.
Ochora succumbed to the burns the following day while his wife Auma died two days later.
According to Ms Grace Proscovia Lakot, an aunt of Auma, the couple had stayed together since 2009 but separated in May.
“The couple had two children and on the fateful Sunday, Ochora came along with two of his children he fathered with Auma at my place. We had discussions on how he would have his wife back,” Ms Lakot said.
She added that Ochora on that day complained to her that his parents had failed to help him pay bride price for his wife who was on the verge of leaving him. “He said his salon business wasn’t earning him enough money to pay the brideprice. I counselled him not to worry because the issue would be settled,” she said.
Ms Lakot further said the deceased seemed convinced and even invited his wife to his home.
The CIID officer at Gulu Central Police Station, Mr James Asubo, confirmed the incident and said police had visited the scene and found Ochora’s body lying near a container smelling petrol.
He said on that Sunday night, Ochora picked a jerrycan containing petrol and moved out of his house, poured the petrol on his house, entered and poured it on himself and the wife before lighting a fire while shouting that he “will die together with his wife.”
