Having attended a single sex Jane Tugume,( not real name) says there were rumors from time to time about certain girls that were suspected to be in a relationship with each other. Not any type of relationship though, the frowned upon gay relationships. She says a number of students were dismissed from the school because of this.
This is somewhat a common occurrence in single school with the most recent being the strike in Ntare school where students protested and wanted to beat up boys who were suspected to be in a relationship.
A few days ago, I came across a story on Daily Monitor’s online portal titled, “Mentally ill patient kills 5 year old boy”. In it, the police spokesperson, Mr Fred Enanga, in reference to a mentally ill murder suspect, was quoted as saying ‘we were told that the leaders were aware of the person’s mental illness’. The government has drafted new rules for private schools particularly on recruitment and employment of teachers.
The new rules which are yet to be formalised into a policy require private schools to recruit qualified teachers, give them appointment letters with clear employment terms and conditions of service, among other things.
