A 38-year-old man is suspected to have committed suicide following claims that his wife is quarrelsome and physically abuses him.
John Oyuru, a resident of Akoyo village, Odek Sub-county in Gulu District, is said to have used an agro-chemical to end his life on Monday.
Family members made frantic efforts to take him to St Peters Health Centre II but he breathed his last as they approached the facility.
Aswa region police spokesperson Jimmy Patrick Okema confirmed the incident and described it as unfortunate.
“The deceased becomes the fifth person who is suspected to have committed suicide following a domestic misunderstanding in Gulu District since this year began,” Mr Okema said.
Elders in the region attribute the high cases of suicide to exposure to mass killings during the two-decade insurgency in the region.
Prof Emilio Ovuga, a psychiatrist at Gulu University Faculty of Medicine, says residents are still traumatised as a result of what they witnessed during the war.
According to Prof Emilio, most patients are seeking services from traditional healers because of lack of information and access to modern services.
Police say at least 100 people have committed suicide in Acholi sub-region since 2009. The most affected districts are Gulu, Nwoya and Agago.
