LIRA – Lira central police is investigating a suspected suicide after a student was found hanging from a tree on the school campus.
The body of Achola Vicky, 23, a year two student of St. Stephen Nursery teachers’ college was found hanging Wedneday morning.
According to the students, the deceased, who hailed from Minakulu in Oyam district, had early Tuesday morning complained of headahce and stomach pain.
“She had sent her sister, Alum Nancy, to buy her coartem drugs which she took,” Adongo Jackyln, her roommate, said.
Police spokeperson Mansur Swed said that postmortem results showed Achola had been three months pregnant.
Florence Adongo, the mother to the deceased, said her daughter had left home for school last week but had never informed them of any problem.
“We didn’t know she was three months pregnant until police told us,” she said.
The unfortunate incident comes hot on the heels of another suicide death by a student in Otuke district who took her life after failing her Uganda Certificate of Education.
Police records indicate committing suicide has become a common practice among young people especially girls in Lango and Acholi sub region.
Swed said within a period of two months alone, 26 people have died by committing suicide, 24 of whom were girls below the age of 20.
RPC North Kyoga region, Richard Aruk Maruk, advised parents to monitor their children closely and be mindful of erratic changes in their behaviour.
