Dear doctor,
I’m 32 years old and I wish to have a baby but I have had disappointments with men before I could conceive with any of them. I have searched for Mr. Right but time is running out. Can I have a baby without a man? I have prayed for miracles to happen but nothing yet. Please advise.

Dr. Herbert Mugarura responds
Dear Sarah N,
It is possible to produce a child without sexual intercourse with a man by artificial insemination which is the deliberate introduction of sperms into the female’s cervix or uterus for the purpose of achieving pregnancy.
Introduction of sperms into the cervix is the easiest and most common method used without the need of a doctor.
One woman is said to have poured sperms from her male partner’s used condom deep into her vagina using a small spoon and conceived. The syringe if used or spoon for that matter may be left in place for several minutes and the woman is advised to lie still for about half-an-hour to increase the chances of the sperms swimming through the cervix into the uterus and improve the success rate.
In case the woman has both of her tubes cut or are totally blocked, in vitro fertilization may be used. The woman’s eggs are fertilized by a man’s sperms outside her body.
This requires a fertility specialist who will monitor and stimulate the woman’s ovulatory process, remove the egg or eggs from the woman’s ovaries, sprawl them with sperms to fertilize them in a fluid medium in a laboratory.
The fertilized egg(s) are cultured for about two to six days in a growth medium and then carefully transferred into the same or another woman’s (surrogate) uterus with the intention of establishing a successful pregnancy.
Now fertility specialists have found a way for women to have babies without men.
They have started corrupting unfertilized eggs by injecting them with calcium. It involves a cocktail of chemicals acting as an ‘artificial sperm’ to trick a human egg into forming an embryo.
Stem cell without fertilization were unknowingly first created by Hwang Woo-suk and his team in February 2004. This made Hwang Woo-suk the first to successfully perform the process of partheno-genesis to create a human embryo and, ultimately, a human parthenogenetic stem cell line.
Researchers say the technology could be used to help women whose husbands are infertile but do not want to use sperms from other men.
Any babies born from the process would be female and genetically identical to their mother. While virgin birth (parthenogenesis – giving birth without the aid of sperms) occurs naturally in plants, some female lizards, water fleas, parasitic wasps, done bees, some kinds of fish, specific hens, snails, it is rare in birds and is almost impossible in human beings.
When it so happens that some unfertilized woman’s eggs start developing into an embryo, these embryos either die at an early stage or turn into a particularly nasty kind of tumour.
This is not a molar pregnancy that starts when the egg is fertilized but instead of a normal, viable pregnancy, it develops into an abnormal mass of cysts.
Are you experiencing the same dilemma as Sarah’s? Or do you know anyone who is? You might be relating to her situation in one way or another. Share your thoughts, advice or experience(s)
