When two people at Kataba Village in Kamengo Sub-county, Mpigi District suffered from a “strange illness” which had similar symptoms, (a running stomach, loss of appetite and vomiting), the residents around took it for granted.

The health personnel at Kataba Village tried to diagnose the disease that was claiming their patients but their efforts were futile. The two passed away and were buried. Nothing much was thought of their deaths at first. But when days later, six other people started complaining of the same symptoms, the village was thrown in panic. Rumours started going round the village, that the death of those people was an act of evil spirits that were “bought” by one of their colleagues.
A mob gathered and moved on to Abdu Mukoka’s home destroying it and banishing him from the village after (more…)

In the current controversial Marriage and Divorce Bill 2009, there is a proposal that provides for the imprisonment of men for five years if convicted of marital rape.

The Bill proposes the sentence for men who force their wives into sexual intercourse on reasonable grounds such as poor health, surgery and after child birth. Some people think this is farfetched, and yet there are women like Juliet Namutebi for whom this is a harsh reality.

I feel that Uganda has lost its way. Sometimes you need the people to come together to move a country forward, we have moved backwards due to the selfishness of men who only look at how a Bill will affect them personally. Our Parliament did not look at the hundreds of ordinary women whom the Marriage and Divorce Bill was meant to protect.

Instead of supporting them, they used the very people the Bill is meant to protect, to argue in their favour by invoking culture and religion. So they call us educated women and “those women are Bazungu”. So are they saying education is a bad thing?

Culture must only be cherished in so far as it does not (more…)

Kapchorwa

Changing the life style of the people living in Kween, Kapchorwa and Bukwo districts to end the traditional Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is proving a headache to local leadership. Although President Museveni in April 2010 approved the law prohibiting the practice and described FGM as crude and an infringement on the girl-child’s rights, statistics indicate that 220 girls were circumcised last year.

Statistics by Reproductive Educative and Community Health (REACH), a community-based NGO, established to improve the reproductive health conditions and discard the harmful practice, say the numbers is still high.

REACH executive director Beatrice Chelangat, while releasing the statistics titled “2012 FGM data for Sabiny sub-region” dated April 2, revealed that there is an increase of the practice amongst married women than the girl-child in schools.

She revealed that although 50 girls were (more…)
